Enersea study reveals significant CO2 reduction when existing assets are powered by offshore wind

In close collaboration with four major oil & gas companies in the Dutch sector of the North Sea, Enersea conducted a comprehensive CO2 reduction study. Process optimisations and electrification with the addition of dedicated offshore wind turbines, will achieve CO2 reductions up to 60%.

The proposed solutions included power requirements of existing assets and the technology required to electrify the platforms to lead into positive economics for base production.

Enersea performed an accurate wind energy assessment to define the various operating modes of the power system considering the grid stability when connecting offshore wind energy to conventional energy systems. Actual implementation plans were made to support accurate cost estimating.

Green offshore wind energy instead of gas can significantly reduce CO2 emissions

CO2 emissions can be significantly reduced in hydrocarbon production on existing assets when using green offshore wind energy instead of gas to power the assets.

Enersea recommends planning for a wind capacity of 200% to the required power levels to have sufficient optimum reduction vs investment. On windy days, the surplus wind power may be utilised to make hydrogen by electrolysis on the same platform and transport it as a blended product with the natural gas to shore.
